Press Release August 2013
Knots,
Spots and Paper Cuts
The diverse
talents of two established makers are on show at Concrete Wardrobe for the October
Maker of the Month exhibition. Lesley Thornton, aka. Crimson Textiles, is
exhibiting her range of knotted tartan jewellery and accessories. ECA graduate
Emily Hogarth is showcasing her paper cut designs, which bring Scottish flora
and fauna to life.
Thornton has
been working with tartan for the past 15 years, first as a kilt maker and later
as an accessories designer. The new range of accessories uses her favourite
fabrics; linen, tartan and tweed, and includes a smattering of polka dots for
good measure.
Working from her garden studio in the
lee of the Ochil Hills, Thornton’s mission is to make fabulous things from
beautiful fabric. She was inspired whilst working with traditional Scottish
tartans to use them in new and unusual ways. This started her range of
contemporary tartan 'jewellery'.
Hogarth’s
motto of ‘making the everyday magical’ sets the scene for her intricate paper
cuts and screen prints. She captures the magic of the Scottish landscape and
its wildlife with a combination of boldness and delicacy. Her designs have also
been turned into tea towels, aprons and cards, and these will be exhibited alongside
her framed and unframed prints, and original paper cuts.
Hogarth has worked with a broad range of
established businesses, including Waitrose and Nivea. Of her October exhibition
she enthuses, “It is great to exhibit work at Concrete Wardrobe.
They are a big supporter of Scottish Arts and Crafts, and the shop is a great
showcase of such a diverse range of work.”
Fiona
McIntosh, Co-owner of Concrete Wardrobe commented, “Crimson and Hogarth’s work
is popular with locals and visitors to Edinburgh. Both makers use Scottish
imagery to create new, exciting and contemporary pieces you’ll want for your
home and your wardrobe.”
Crimson
and Hogarth will be on display at Concrete Wardrobe from 1st to 31st
October 2013.
Concrete Wardrobe is open Monday to Saturday 11am to

The Essential Styles
This month
the perfectly formed accessories of Edinburgh based Blair Sorley are on display
at Concrete Wardrobe for its May Maker of the Month exhibition.
Specialising
in women’s leather accessories, Blair Sorley is run by ECA graduate Caitlin
Blair. With extensive experience in the world of theatre costume, Blair has
honed her skills as a maker, and indulged her joint passions for period costume
and women’s accessories. The result is a range of practical and stylish bags
and purses, whose designs are inspired by history, but have a distinctly contemporary
feel.
The signature
bag, a compact clutch with metal frame and oversized ball closures has been
part of the Blair Sorley range since the start, and continues to be a best
seller. Blair explains, “It has the feel of a vintage piece, but at the same
time is very modern. With new colours available each season, it’s perfect for a
special occasion at any time of year.”
Focussing on
simple, classic designs, Blair allows the leather to speak for itself, without
the need for embellishment. She says, “I prefer simplicity and people seem to
appreciate that in my work.”
New work for
the May Maker of the Month exhibition includes a new small cross-body bag.
Large enough for your essentials and hand crafted in sumptuous Italian leather.
It is available in the new colours, Ruby and Hot Pink.
A regular
feature at Concrete Wardrobe, this is Blair Sorley’s second solo exhibition at
the Edinburgh design led shop. Blair describes the exhibition as “A brilliant
opportunity to show current work as a larger collection, and to showcase new
designs in front of an appreciative audience.”
Fiona
McIntosh, accessories aficionado and co-owner of Concrete Wardrobe commented,
“Blair Sorley’s designs are popular with Concrete Wardrobe customers because of
their good design and quality craftsmanship. They’re the sorts of bag that will
always have a place in your wardrobe. Investment pieces that will serve and
delight you for years to come.”
Blair Sorley
will be on display at Concrete Wardrobe from 1st to 31st
May 2013.

Lovely new work in the shop today by Fort William based designer maker Jayne Stephen. Jayne makes jewellery and accessories using delicately hand cut leather. Her new work includes this beautiful cuff (top), hair pins and earrings in gold, silver, black and putty. I love these long dangly earrings, they're practically weightless.
