Press Release August 2013

 Knots, Spots and Paper Cuts

The diverse talents of two established makers are on show at Concrete Wardrobe for the October Maker of the Month exhibition. Lesley Thornton, aka. Crimson Textiles, is exhibiting her range of knotted tartan jewellery and accessories. ECA graduate Emily Hogarth is showcasing her paper cut designs, which bring Scottish flora and fauna to life.
Thornton has been working with tartan for the past 15 years, first as a kilt maker and later as an accessories designer. The new range of accessories uses her favourite fabrics; linen, tartan and tweed, and includes a smattering of polka dots for good measure.

Working from her garden studio in the lee of the Ochil Hills, Thornton’s mission is to make fabulous things from beautiful fabric. She was inspired whilst working with traditional Scottish tartans to use them in new and unusual ways. This started her range of contemporary tartan 'jewellery'.
Hogarth’s motto of ‘making the everyday magical’ sets the scene for her intricate paper cuts and screen prints. She captures the magic of the Scottish landscape and its wildlife with a combination of boldness and delicacy. Her designs have also been turned into tea towels, aprons and cards, and these will be exhibited alongside her framed and unframed prints, and original paper cuts.

Hogarth has worked with a broad range of established businesses, including Waitrose and Nivea. Of her October exhibition she enthuses, “It is great to exhibit work at Concrete Wardrobe. They are a big supporter of Scottish Arts and Crafts, and the shop is a great showcase of such a diverse range of work.”
Fiona McIntosh, Co-owner of Concrete Wardrobe commented, “Crimson and Hogarth’s work is popular with locals and visitors to Edinburgh. Both makers use Scottish imagery to create new, exciting and contemporary pieces you’ll want for your home and your wardrobe.”
Crimson and Hogarth will be on display at Concrete Wardrobe from 1st to 31st October 2013.
Concrete Wardrobe is open Monday to Saturday 11am to 7pm. (Sunday 12 - 5pm.)
