Woven Wears

November sees the return of Tessuti and Pickone as Concrete Wardrobe’s joint Makers of the Month. As Co-owners of Edinburgh’s finest independent gift and lifestyle shop, James Donald and Fiona McIntosh are exhibiting their newest and most exciting work to date.

Fiona McIntosh, the brains behind Tessuti, continues to be inspired by the imagery and designs of the 1950’s and 60’s. Her range of fashion accessories includes silk, lambswool and cashmere scarves, wraps, hand-warmers and neckties. This month she launches a new range of ceramic tablewares, reflecting her house style in a new medium.

Inspiration for James Donald’s work at Pickone comes from Scottish land and seascapes. He has produced three new lines of large double cloth scarves with names that are evocative of recent trips to the Outer Hebrides – Hebridean Sunset, Hebridean Gold and Hebridean Light. Double cloth is the process of weaving two cloths together interchanging the warp and the weft, revealing blocks of colour that alter across the cloth. His techniques create complex patterns and surface textures.

Tessuti has seen a busy year in 2012, with exhibitions in New York, London and Manchester. Next year McIntosh also plans to exhibit in Paris. Of her exhibition at Concrete Wardrobe, she comments, “it’s always special exhibiting at Concrete Wardrobe, it’s like bringing my work home.”

Pickone is also exhibiting digitally printed silk scarves and hand etched whisky glasses at his Maker of the Month showcase. These pieces have been designed using iPhone ‘app’ technology, with patterns based on the same imagery as the woven pieces. The result is a rich, full and diverse range of work that also references the repetitive nature of traditional Shetland knitting patterns.

The Tessuti and Pickone collections will be on sale at Concrete Wardrobe from 1st to 30th November 2012.
Concrete Wardrobe is open Monday to Saturday 11am to 7pm. (Sunday 12 - 5pm.)
