News Release: Immediate Release May 2014
Sculptural Storytelling
This
July, the fresh and imaginative world of cardboard sculpture by Charlotte Duffy
is on display at Concrete Wardrobe for the latest Maker of the Month
Exhibition.
Duffy
creates large and small scale sculptures using recycled cardboard which are
hand finished with intricate illustration and have a strong sense of
storytelling. The inspiration behind
Duffy’s work comes from a love of everyday objects and situations and a passion
for working with recycled materials to create original and affordable pieces.
Describing
the philosophy behind her work, Duffy explains, “I don't think art should have to be made from
expensive resources. Everyone should feel able to make something from anything”.
Based
in Auchtermuchty, Fife, Duffy studied Philosophy at the University of St.
Andrews before deciding to move into the visual arts. She founded ‘Waste of Paint Productions’ in
2009 and her work to date includes commissions to create cardboard sculpture
portraits of people and animals and a large scale retail installation.
As
Maker of the Month at Concrete Wardrobe, Duffy will be hosting a new range of
cardboard busts of “aristocratic animals and out of work philosophers” in a
collection titled HIGHBROW. Of her
exhibition, Concrete Wardrobe Co-owner James Donald said “We are very excited
to welcome this imaginative and original collection of work by Charlotte
Duffy. Her sculptures are not only
fascinating for the stories they tell and their strong visual impact, but also
in the stories behind how and why they were created”.
Charlotte
Duffy is on display at Concrete Wardrobe from 1st to 31st
July 2014.
Concrete Wardrobe is open Monday to Saturday 11am to
7pm. (Sunday 12 - 5pm.)
