The Beauty of Birdlife

The screen-printed designs of Kittie Jones are on display at Concrete Wardrobe this June, as part of the Maker of the Month series of exhibitions.


Jones is exhibiting limited edition hand-pulled screen prints, tea towels and a range of greetings cards, all inspired by British birds.  Prices range from £3 to £250.


Her subjects are initially researched through repeated sketching directly from life, a method that enables her to get a real sense of her subject: its shape, movement, character and purpose. These sketches are then worked up in the studio to create the final design for print.  


Jones’ preferred technique of screen-printing is the same method used by Andy Warhol for his famous ‘Marilyn’ series. Each layer of colour is hand drawn onto tracing paper before being exposed photographically onto a fine mesh screen, creating a stencil effect. Coloured ink is then pushed through the screen onto the paper to make up each different colour layer. The finished result is a strong, colourful graphic image with a real sense of the subject and his being.


Alongside her range of screen prints, Jones is exhibiting a limited edition range of resin jewellery produced in collaboration with Scottish jeweller Amelia Smith, especially for her Maker of the Month exhibition.  Jones commented ‘exhibiting at Concrete Wardrobe has enabled me to diversify my own range of work, introduce work with another maker and in new mediums. The new tea towel design is inspiration for producing future work on fabric.’


Fiona McIntosh, Co-owner of Concrete Wardrobe observed, ‘Jones’ work has a playful quality. Her subjects are full of character and her palette is vibrant but not sickly. The perfect accompaniment to the start of summer.’


Kittie Jones’ work will be on display at Concrete Wardrobe from 1^st to 30^th June 2012. 


Concrete Wardrobe is open Monday to Saturday 10am – 6pm, Sundays 12 – 4pm.

Concrete Wardrobe has just received these beautifully made pieces by Duncan of Jordanstone trained jewellery Jenny Parker.


These roll-printed stering silver pieces incorporate sections of carefully Scottish Ballachulish slate and come in a variety of shapes and pieces. 

 

We currently have in our collections rings - which can be made to any size, mens cufflinks, kilt pins, brooches, neck pieces and bracelets.


This is a welcome addition to our current collections and we are very pleased to have yet another wonderful Scottish trained designer maker as part of our strong stable of suppliers. 

Lovely new work in the shop today by Fort William based designer maker Jayne Stephen. Jayne makes jewellery and accessories using delicately hand cut leather. Her new work includes this beautiful cuff (top), hair pins and earrings in gold, silver, black and putty. I love these long dangly earrings, they're practically weightless. Pat Butcher eat your heart out!
